What is resiliency, and why is it important?

Resiliency is the ability of a workload to adapt, recover, and continue operating effectively in the face of disruptions or failures. It goes beyond traditional backup and disaster recovery solutions by providing continuous availability, fault tolerance, and rapid incident response. In today’s digital landscape, where downtime can result in significant financial losses, reputational damage, and customer dissatisfaction, resiliency is no longer optional but a critical business requirement.

Versent’s Approach to Resiliency

Our approach to resiliency on AWS is comprehensive and tailored to customer’s specific needs:

Resilient Architecture Design
We work closely with our customers to understand their business requirements, assess their risk profile, and design an architecture that ensures high availability, fault tolerance, and scalability. Our experts leverage AWS global regions and availability zones, alongside services like AWS Auto Scaling, Amazon Elastic Load Balancers, Amazon RDS, Amazon S3, Amazon CloudFront, Amazon Shield & AWS WAF and more to build robust and resilient solutions.
 Disaster Recovery Planning
We help customers develop a comprehensive disaster recovery strategy that includes regular data backups, replication across multiple AWS Availability Zones or regions, automated failover mechanisms, and rapid recovery procedures using services like AWS Backup, AWS DataSync and AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery. By implementing disaster recovery best practices, we minimise downtime and ensure customer’s critical systems are always up and running.

Monitoring and Alerting
Proactive monitoring is essential for early detection of potential issues and timely response. We implement robust monitoring solutions using AWS CloudWatch, AWS Config, AWS Trusted Advisor and third-party tools to continuously monitor customer’s workload health, performance, and security. Our alerting mechanisms notify our team and customer stakeholders immediately, enabling swift action to mitigate any potential disruption.
 Load Balancing and Auto Scaling
We leverage AWS Elastic Load Balancing and AWS Auto Scaling capabilities to distribute incoming traffic across multiple instances, ensuring optimal performance and scalability. This approach helps customer’s workload handle sudden spikes in traffic while maintaining high availability and a seamless user experience.

Security and Compliance
Resiliency goes hand in hand with security. We implement industry-leading security measures, including data encryption, access controls, intrusion detection systems, and security incident response plans. Additionally, we help customers achieve and maintain compliance with relevant industry regulations such as SOC-2, PII, APRA, AHPRA, PCI-DSS, and more.
 Continuous Improvement and Optimisation
Resiliency is an ongoing process. We work with customers to continuously optimise their AWS environment, identify areas for improvement, and implement best practices. By staying up to date with the latest AWS innovations and technologies, we ensure your infrastructure remains resilient in the face of evolving threats and challenges.

Versent’s Multi-Region Resiliency Patterns

Having worked with large global enterprises, Versent has developed mature multi-region resiliency patterns that align with your business needs. Depending on the required RTO (Recovery Time Objective) and RPO (Recovery Point Objective), multi-region resiliency solutions can be implemented for both active/passive & active/active strategies. The following architectures showcase our AWS multi-region options;

Multi-region Backup & Restore

The Multi-region Backup & Restore DR strategy has the longest RTO/RPO but is the cheapest & simplest to set up. It consists of replicating files and snapshots cross-region and using manual methods to recover the system in the alternate region.

Pilot Light & Warm Standby

Both these strategies are similar however the pilot light requires more manual interaction to activate upon a disaster. A warm standby has a cross-region architecture ready to operate, however not at the scale of production.

Multi-region Active/Active

The Multi-region Active/Active solution is perfect for mission-critical systems to ensure zero downtime, with near zero data loss.
